The significance of ships and boats has always been present in Bertil Vallien’s life and work. Like an imaginary space, he has journeyed through the glass. He sails his boat, seeing men fishing and refugees fleeing for their lives. The similarity of the boat to a seed pod, which could contain any form of life, is intriguing. Bertil captures our curiosity, and if we give the sculpture some time, he makes us participants in the unknown journey that life presents. Fortress Vessel is part of Bertil Vallien’s anniversary collection, “Bertil Vallien: 60 Years with Kosta Boda” (1963–2023), and is handmade at Kosta Glassworks in Sweden with details in real 21-karat gold.

Azur Moon Petrol, by Bertil Vallien, is part of the Kosta Boda artist collection. This object in petroleum blue is cast in a graphite mold at Kosta Glassworks. The mold creates an impression of a face bathed in moonlight.

Mirage is on an oblique pipe for the curved shapes, with a so-called zoom technique that dons the separated colors. Here, the work of the master blowers in the foundry is complemented by equally masterful finishing work in the grinding shop. The sculptural expression is based on a sophisticated optical interplay between color, shape and light, Göran Wärff's hallmark.

The Polar votive candle holder from Kosta Boda’s open archive is originally from a 1974 collection of several glass sculptures in a variety of colors and sizes, calling to mind rippling water that is frozen in time. With Polar, you can combine several sculptures in different sizes to create a playful group.

Polar from Kosta Boda, originally launched in 1974 and celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2024 is a collection of glass sculptures in different colors and sizes reminiscent of rippling water frozen in time. The amber votive lights up the room, whether grouped or used on its own.

“Back to basics. I wanted to create a classic, decorative and functional series that celebrates craftsmanship and the innate beauty of the glass.” Red Rim is hand-made in several steps. First, the first parison of lead-free crystal is rolled in powdered color. The color is then heated before the parison is blown into a shape that gives the molten glass its optical pattern. Clear glass is gathered over the parison to enclose the optical pattern in the glass, and then the glass is blown into its final form and shaped into a bowl or a vase. Finally, the piece is attached to a glass-blowing pipe and blown up a touch more before the red rim is applied from a color rod.

Crackle and thunder – a magical wonder! At Kosta Boda, we marvel at beautifully preserved cracks in glass. The vase in circular glass from the Crackle collection has an expressive, sculptural exterior created using an old handicraft technique where the hot glass is dipped in ice-cold water. The circular glass that Crackle Circular is made of, makes the products shift in color, and the small bubbles created during the process of making circular glass into a new product, make each vase unique. As Ellen Ehk Åkesson was asked to create an art object in honor of Ulrica Hydman Vallien's artistry, the magnificent Ticka was born. The object became part of Kosta Boda's 2021 tribute collection to the late Hydman Vallien. Ticka, available in a limited edition of 100 pieces, is a vessel from Ellen’s own imagination based on the same shape as Ulrica’s “snake bowl”. “I wanted to make something of my own, but with a connection to Ulrica’s art. For the tribute collection, I was inspired by the directness of her approach and style. The vessel symbolizes a tree trunk. It’s covered with modeled polypore mushrooms, called ‘Ticka’ in Swedish – hence the name.” – Ellen Ehk Åkesson. Ticka is handmade in Kosta, Sweden.

Clear/Gold

For the first time ever, Asa Jungnelius's contemporary classic Snippan is being presented as a smaller sculpture that can also be used as a bowl. Since it was first created in 2003, Snippan has become a contemporary feminist symbol. The sculpture is part of the National Museum collection (Sweden's Museum of Art and Design). Snippan pink for the Kosta Boda artist collection is cast in a graphite mold and colored in the hot shop here in Kosta.

The Contrast collection from Kosta Boda is manufactured using a technique called centrifugation. The technique, invented in Sweden's Kingdom of crystal in the 1950s, creates veils of color inside the glass mass. In combination with the color powder and sticks added during the process, each piece becomes unique. The blue/blue bowl is just beautiful on its own – or why not filled with fruit? Renowned artist Bertil Vallien has named this collection of sculptures Vitruvius, after the Roman architect. Vitruvius' stance on houses and humans, dating back nearly 2000 years, has always appealed to Bertil. Incorporating impulses from music was just as important as mathematics to the Roman architect and philosopher in his field of work. Inspired by Vitruvius' interest in city planning, Bertil has made the little glass buildings in this collection in the shape of board-game figures – to be moved around according to taste and preference. Åsa Jungnelius' classic sculpture Mother of Pearl is now available as a smaller object in the Kosta Boda artist collection. Mother of pearl is uniquely shaped in hot glass and the color is poured into the scoop. The pattern is created individually by the mold. The crystal-clear pearl is hand-sculpted and the pieces are joined with heat in the hot shop at Kosta Glassworks.

The rock is a new design statement in votives, mixing inspiration from the past with fierce independence. The collection is cast in colored glass at the Kosta glassworks and in several distinct colorways. The newest addition in this collection comes in striking color variation.

From its origins as a tiny seed, it sprouts and grows into a bean. Similarly, there is something unique to behold as the spirit of the glassworker infuses the liquid glass. Centrifugal force influences the shape, but it is handled with wet newspaper. The collection is blown entirely free-hand, and no two pieces are identical.

Happiness was inspired by one of Kjell Engman’s trips to the US, where he was captivated by a women’s gospel choir performance at a church, filled with singing and dancing. He has eternalized the memory in various ways with these glass women. The object from the Kosta Boda artist collection is pressed in a mold at Kosta Glassworks and then shaped into its unique design and hand-painted.

Göran Wärff created the Polar series with inspiration from landscapes and ice. Polar is a bold, artistic object from the archives of Kosta Boda. It was originally launched in 1974 after its creation as a gift for the Sydney Opera House. Polar is a series of glass sculptures that can also function as candle holders. The production technique allows the glass to flow down, resulting in a unique object each time. When the piece is moved around the room, another dimension is added through optical illusion. Combine the different sizes to create a playful grouping, or display the biggest one as a carefully selected design object in an art-loving home.

Blue like the sky and the sea. Like a cloudless day, light-hearted. I think about it when the clouds roll in and I’m in need of a daydream. The Pavilion is a collection of vases made in collaboration with the renowned Swedish design studio Front. The collection has a distinctive, uniform expression - with its characteristic geometric interplay - while shapes vary wildly between vases. The glass tulip vase is superb for a sprawling bouquet.

Crackle is a mouth-blown collection with a distinctive, organic look. It is made using a technique in which hot glass is cooled in ice-cold water. The meeting of hot and cold produces a crackled surface, hence the name, Crackle – reminding us of the incredible power possessed by fire and water as natural elements. The pieces in this collection were meant to be used: for serving, storage, for spending time with friends and family. Each piece in the collection can stand alone as a solo player, and they all work well together as a group.

Bertil Vallien has created a collection of twelve Brains, with individual expressions, which is being launched in autumn 2021. The pieces are punty pressed in a mold at Kosta Glassworks. Many of the objects are then painted, some with leaves of gold or silver. All Brains come in a velvet bag and in a gift box. Bertil Vallien created Brains in the 80s as “an anti-stress object for the hand and the eye. To place at the desk, have it next to the bed, and to bring along when traveling.” In the past, each head used to have a name inspired by great thinkers or artists. Instead, this edition is launched as “seeds of thoughts” or messengers. “I sometimes think of the brain like a seed. When a thought is blossoming in the darkness behind the protective skull. It is almost like the brain is blooming. Thoughts can survive for thousands of years, just like seeds, and I want to believe the good always conquers the bad. These mini-sculptures with a message fit in your hand and have been named Brains. I have tried to enclose some ”seeds of thoughts” in the pieces, that have passed through my own brain… can you relate? Just give them a moment to mature” – Bertil Vallien

First introduced in 1974, Sunflower by Kosta Boda is a classic collection of votives designed by Göran Wärff. Sunflower is one of the prime examples of how Wärff drew inspiration from nature and the play of natural light, resulting in truly iconic glass designs. Sunflower is part of Kosta Boda's reissue catalogue, where select products from our archives, are brought back to life and new audiences. The 115mm votive is beautiful on its own but used in the set of three different heights they complete each other and creates a vivid reflection of light.

With a background as a professional rock guitarist, musical influences play a large part in Kjell Engman's work. The Swedish glass artist has created Fidji, an object of multiple colors merged into one whose shape bears a resemblance to the musical instrument organ pipe. The extraordinary Fidji XL is handmade at Kosta Glassworks in Sweden and is part of the Kosta Boda Artist collection.

Rocky Baroque is a rebellious take with ancient roots. Monumental contours meet raw, jagged surfaces in this collection of vibrant candle holders. The item from Kosta Boda resides in the borderlands between sculpture and utility object, a recurring theme in artist Hanna Hansdotter's design. Humor and irony are other tools used to interpret and challenge authoritarian principles. The result is its own genre – Rocky Baroque. Rocky Baroque kryptonite is handmade in Kosta, Sweden.
