It would be practically impossible to fabricate your own casing since the finish on the door and trim is a sort of rubbery veneer and the frame is slotted to accept this product specifically. So just know the door will be a couple hundred dollars more and be a timely installation when compared to a real pre-hung door. I am happy enough with the installed result to give it 4 stars though.. I purchased this in eight foot lengths to install all over the house: living room, den, four bedrooms, and hallway. It is beautifully intricate in design and has held up over the years with no cracking or chipping. We painted it a white semi-gloss. My only minor concern is that in the winter it does shrink a bit at the seams, showing gaps. But I think a little white caulk would take care of it. Added plus: we had one wall that was curved.
