I wonderd whether a 40 watt bulb would give out enough light but it is just perfect for ambience, In fact, I used the dimmer to soften the light a bit more. The only caution I would have is that you can see the bare bulb when you are standing up and looking directly down on the lamp, Therefore, I don't have it on an end table that is chair height (the glare would bother me). Perfect touch for the look that I wanted. I wanted something somewhere between spare contemporary and traditional, which is usually to heavy/fussy for me. This lamp is clean-looking but doesn't look as if it belongs in a cold medical exam-room. I think it fits into the space with a more transitional style without sticking out like a sore thumb. I'm very happy with the result. The uplighting gives the perfect effect for the vaulted ceiling. The lamp is solid and stable. The on/off switch doesn't have the flimsy feel that many others that I've purchased had, so I'm hopeful that this one will hold up longer. I took one star off because assembly was a bit frustrating; I had more than a little difficulty working the electrical cord down inside the tube enough to screw the top of the lamp down completely - a VERY tight fit that took several attempts.
