When it comes to decorating, Amy Carrillo believes a house is not a home until you add the pieces that truly matter to you. And she puts that philosophy into practice: The Love On Sunday designer and blogger created this eclectic yet minimal look in her living and dining area by combining modern pieces with family heirlooms and treasures from her travels. Despite the wide variety of styles showcased in the two spaces, they flow seamlessly together for one great look. Read on to see how Amy was able to create a space she’ll love for many more Sundays to come.

How would you describe your decor style?

Vintage modern. I love rooms that are cozy, inviting, and relaxed. I also tend to gravitate towards handmade, natural materials with lots of texture and graphic patterns.

What was the inspiration behind these adjoining spaces?

We love traveling and photography, and we wanted the main living area to display some of our favorite treasures. I remember during one trip to the Bahamas I was walking along the beach with my husband and as we were talking about our dreams and goals, I stumbled upon this beautiful rock. I took it home and framed it as a reminder of that special moment in our life.

Where did you decide to splurge, and where did you choose to save?

Since we spend a lot of our time in the main living area when we aren’t working, we decided to splurge on a sofa that would be both comfortable and durable. We chose to save on accent furniture like side tables and chairs. Most of our pieces are flea market finds or were acquired secondhand via classifieds. It’s a great way to save on smaller pieces if you don’t have the budget.

What is your favorite piece in the room?

I love the Gramercy Hand-Loomed Charcoal Area Rug by Momeni. It’s durable, so soft underfoot, and I love that it’s 100 percent wool and hand-loomed.

What advice do you have for those that want to achieve your style?

I think it’s fun to follow trends, but if you surround yourself with pieces that are functional and that you truly love, your space will never go out of style. Don’t be afraid to display pieces of art, mementos that make you happy, photos from your travels, family heirlooms—it’s all about what matters to you.
