Find the right one for you.
Wondering, "what is a rabbit hutch?" Keep reading. We provide information on what it is, why you might want one, and how to choose the best one for your pet.
What Is a Rabbit Hutch?
A rabbit hutch is an enclosure designed for housing one or more rabbits. Often made from sturdy, weather-resistant materials such as wood and metal, rabbit hutches come in various shapes and sizes. These structures aim to offer a safe, protective environment where your rabbit can eat, sleep, and play.
Most rabbit hutches will include a sheltered area, usually enclosed on all sides with solid wood sides and a roof, so it is dry during inclement weather, and provides a relaxing space for your bunny to sleep. Along with the fully enclosed area, there is an wire mesh enclosed area to allow rabbits to safely play and exercise.
Benefits of a Rabbit Hutch
Protection from Predators: Rabbit hutches, with their sturdy wire mesh and secure latches, can protect your pet from potential predators.
Weather Protection: Hutches are designed to withstand outdoor conditions. Properly insulated, they can keep your rabbit warm in winters and cool during the summers.
Health Incentive: Hutches, especially multi-level designs, encourage exercise and play, which is crucial to your rabbit's physical and mental health.
Easy Cleaning: Most rabbit hutches have removable trays or sections which makes cleaning them an easier task.
Rabbit Hutch Sizes
Rabbit hutches come in various sizes to accommodate different rabbit breeds and the number of rabbits you intend to house. For average sized bunnies, we recommend at least 12 square feet for their living area and 32 square feet for their exercise area per rabbit.
No matter what size they are, their play area should allow them to hop 3-4 times, the height of the hutch should be tall enough that the rabbit can sit up on its back legs without its ears hitting the roof.
Your pet should have enough room to move, explore, and stretch out comfortably. Having a bigger hutch is always better for them.
Some rabbit hutches are also designed as multi-level structures. These offer your rabbit the opportunity to jump and climb, mimicking their natural behavior in the wild. The vertical designs also work great if you have limited garden space.
Rabbit Hutch vs. Rabbit Cage
At first glance, rabbit cages and hutches might seem similar. However, a rabbit hutch is typically larger and made of more substantial materials, crafted to be placed outdoors and endure various weather conditions and potential predators, while a rabbit cage is a smaller enclosure made from light materials like plastic and wire usually meant for indoor use.
Rabbit Hutch Features
Weather Protection: Make sure your hutch shields your rabbit from heat, cold, and dampness.
Slide Out Tray: These are designed to have a tray beneath the hutch to catch droppings. It makes cleaning the hutch easier.
