It's Easter egg decorating season! Wasn't it just Valentine's Day? If your childhood looked anything like mine, this time of year was spent dipping hard boiled eggs into color coordinated cups. Remember that dinky wire dipper? And smelling like vinegar for the rest of the day? It was so much fun!
Those kits are all well and good (and hello...super cheap!), but we can do better than that! Why settle for simply colored eggs when we can think outside the average Easter egg?
I've seen these marbled eggs before and have wanted to try them for ages!
Here is what you need:
- Shaving cream or whipped dessert topping
- Food coloring
- Eggs
- Shallow dish
- Paper plates
- Paper towels
Tip!
If you're worried about little kids putting their hands in their mouths, use a whipped dessert topping. For older kids and adults, shaving cream works well.

This was a little messy, but a lot of fun! My daughter loved swirling the colors into the shaving cream and coming up with new color combinations.
Watch out, you'll have some color on your fingers when all is said and done.

We popped our eggs, shaving cream and all, into the fridge for about 30 minutes. Then we tested an egg. The colors were there, but a bit pale so we decided to let them sit overnight and see how they looked then.
The next morning the colors were much brighter! If you want truly bright and bold colors, soak your eggs in some vinegar before starting. We also discovered the colors stay brighter if you wipe the shaving cream off rather than rinsing.

I think we're going to do another round with different colors. Maybe neon! This was such a fun afternoon activity. Great for kiddos who love messy play. Plus, no cups of dye to send spilling all over your countertop. Thanks to A Thrifty Mom and Tot School for providing inspiration for this project.
