Measure Your Space
Getting precise measurements of your closet is imperative, allowing you to squeeze every inch of storage out of it! The above diagram is a foolproof guide for measuring your closet for a system. Pro tip: Ensure you're taking the side-to-side and front-to-back measurements from the inside of your closet. If your space is an abnormal shape, measure each side (from the inside) just as you would a rectangular closet.
Tip! Consider sketching out the dimensions of your closet to get a visual idea of what configurations will work best.
Decipher Your Needs
It may seem counterintuitive to organize your clothes before you've ordered a closet system, but taking stock of your clothing by type (coats, sweaters, slacks, etc.) tells you exactly what you need from your closet. Once you've determined your issues, you'll be able to easily choose a storage solution to implement. Below, we outline the best fixes to pesky problems, and help you create a closet tailored to your specific needs.
Problem: Too many hanging items, which forces you to stuff them on the rack, or worse, fold them creating wrinkles.
Solution: Double your hanging rods.
Problem: Not enough space for all your shoes.
Solution: Specialized shoe racks keep your favorite pairs from piling up on the closet floor.
Problem: No place for socks and unmentionables.
Solution: In-closet drawers and bins ensure everything is conveniently located.
Problem: Too many T-shirts or sweaters.
Solution: Shelves or drawers. Consider shelving so your entire wardrobe will always feel at your fingertips. Conversely, if you appreciate a streamlined look drawers should be your go-to.
Problem: Your scarf, tie, or belt collection is becoming unruly.
Solution: Specialized racks can tame them with ease, making you more likely to actually use those accessories.
