Game Day: 4 Tailgate Pizza Recipes
Try one of these delicious pizza recipes for a twist on traditional tailgate fare.
Take your tailgate to the next level and make a pizza at your next game day get-together! Use prepped foods and ingredients found at your average tailgate party, layer them onto a pizza and simply grill it on a pizza stone or directly on the grill. It's a whole new way to enjoy tried and true crowd-pleasers!
Tips For Grilling Pizza
- If you're cooking directly on the grill, make sure the grill is thoroughly cleaned before starting.
- Dust your prep area, pizza stone, and pizza peel with coarse cornmeal to help the pizza slide on and off the pizza stone without stretching or ripping.
- If you are making pizza dough from scratch, roll out the dough at home first to save time, then put it between two pieces of plastic wrap and roll it up. It's easy to transport and you can easily unroll it!
- Prep all ingredients ahead of time to have on-hand before you get started. (Since the pizzas cook quickly it's best that everything is pre-cooked.)
- Start small, if you're cooking with a pizza stone, your pizza needs to fit onto the stone, plus it's much easier to cook smaller pizzas than one giant one.
- If you've chosen to use a pizza stone, place the stone on the grill and let it slowly warm up to avoid cracking.
Sausage and Peppers Tailgate Pizza
Create this classy tailgate pizza from grilled Italian sausages and peppers. First, lay out the dough on the pizza stone, or directly on the grill, and spread a thin layer of tomato sauce. Then add the pre-chopped, cooked Italian sausage and peppers. Next, place slices of fresh mozzarella cheese on top. Garnish with herbs such as basil or rosemary and salt and pepper before placing on the grill. Cook until the crust is golden brown and the mozzarella is melted.
Ingredients
- 1 pizza dough
- 1 cup traditional tomato pizza sauce
- 2 servings sauteed sausage and peppers, sliced
- 2 balls of fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
- 1 teaspoon dried basilFresh herbs to garnish (We used rosemary.)
Buffalo Chicken Tailgate Pizza
Every good tailgate has buffalo chicken! Both boneless and bone-in buffalo chicken will work for this fan favorite. To start, cut up the buffalo chicken into bite-size pieces and set aside. Place the dough onto the pizza stone, and spread a layer of ranch or blue cheese dressing onto the dough. Add the chopped buffalo chicken and red onion slices, then sprinkle a layer of cheddar cheese on top. Finish with red pepper flakes and sea salt. Grill until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
Tip! If you're using bone-in chicken wings, simply pull the meat off of the bone with two forks and discard bones.
Ingredients
- 1 pizza dough
- Blue cheese or ranch dressing
- 2 strips pre-cooked buffalo chicken, cut or shredded
- 1/2 sliced red onion
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- Additional buffalo sauce (optional)
- Red pepper flakes (optional)

Cheeseburger Tailgate Pizza
Inspired by another tailgate classic, try out this all-American pizza at the next big game. First, place dough on pizza stone or the grill. Then, add a layer of mild cheese, like shredded Colby-Jack. Next add pre-grilled, chopped up hamburger patties. Cook on the grill until the crust is golden and the cheese is melted. Remove from heat and add your favorite special sauce to the top (try mixing ketchup and mayonnaise for an easy version.) Let partygoers add their own toppings.
Tip! Don't pile on too many toppings! Since grilled pizzas have a heat source from below, a thin layer of toppings is best.
