Before & After: The HGTV® Dream Home 2017 Master Bedroom Gets a Refreshing Renovation

This suite was transformed into a cozy sanctuary, flooded with natural light.

This beautiful bedroom in the HGTV Dream Home 2017 endured a serious ugly duckling phase before becoming the envy-inducing haven it is today.

A built-in entertainment center with dated glass shelving awkwardly chopped the room in half, disrupting traffic flow and blocking the attractive bay windows. Full-length shutters, an old-fashioned ceiling fan, and a popcorn ceiling produced a dingy atmosphere, while yellow walls clashed with the glossy medium-toned hardwood floors.

The demolition of the built-ins modernizes the design, emphasizing the room’s generous size. A seating area with armchairs, a love seat, and plush throw pillows provides a private, relaxing escape. Replacing the blinds with crisp white curtain panels floods the room with natural light.

The removal of the crown molding gives a seamless feel to the deep blue hues of the walls and ceiling, creating a cozy atmosphere and establishing a bold new color palette. Navy, teal, and indigo tones combine to create a unified, textured look without becoming monochromatic.

The pale-toned matte floor is a neutral backdrop for a bold shiborirug and darker mahogany pieces. Capped off with on-point decorative accents and a sleek ceiling fan, the bedroom design is modern, comfortable, and timeless—perfect for sleeping in or curling up with a good book.
