I ordered these sconces knowing I would not hard wire them for electricity, as I planned to use them in my hallway where there is already sufficient overhead lighting. These are just for ambience, and I am using battery-powered candles in them. We just mounted them directly to the wall, and I placed the 2"w x 3"h candles right over the light bulb socket. The candles are set for a five-hour on-off cycle every day, so I don't have to take them in and out of the glass when I want to use them. And since we kept the wiring inside the cover plate, we can hard-wire them in the future, should we want to have them electrified. The only negative, and it is relatively minor, is that the sconces lean slightly in toward the wall. I've tried to straighten them out, but I don't want to run the risk of damaging them in some way if I try too hard! Really, the only reason I notice it is because I see the side view first, since they are in the hallway. If they were, say, over a mantel or bracketing a doorway where they would mostly only be seen head-on, it would not be an issue at all. The sconces were very easy to assemble, and just as easy to install. The glass is pretty thin, so we will be careful when we have to remove the candles to replace the batteries.
