Gorgeous Glimpse of a Mystic Unicorn

from Texas on 04/27/2015 – Verified Buyer

If you want a gorgeous glimpse of a mystic unicorn, then you're in luck! This tapestry is definitely gorgeous and we get compliments on it all the time. This was a first time purchase for us from your company and it's just as good as anything we've ever purchased from that other very well known online retailer.

The traditional Thai weaving art known as yok dok is showcased in this Thai Cattleya Hand Crafted Cotton Folk Style Wall Hanging from Keawpankanlaya in Thailand. Stylized floral motifs are woven in shades of lavender, dark purple, green, white and metallic silver threads with a black border. Wearing a jaguar headdress and pants, a Maya dancer performs a dramatic dance surrounded by ancient glyphs. He represents the jaguar deity of the Maya, ruler of the Underworld, the realm of the dead. Rhina Rehmann replicates the image originally found in Tikal (Petén) decorating an urn with the ashes of a Maya priest. The urn is now at Harvard's Peabody Museum. Cilli, the beautiful rice goddess, lifts her hands in blessing. Ni Luh Suryati works in the intricate double ikat technique to create this extraordinary geringsing textile. Ikat is a tie dye technique in which the threads are dyed before they are woven. Thus the pattern may vary slightly from that pictured. These spectacular textiles are elaborated using the double ikat method. Ikat means "to knot" in Indonesian and Malay, and it is a time-consuming process known only to a handful of weavers around the world. Hand-spun cotton is initially dyed an eggshell-yellow hue using the oil of the kemiri nut, before the weaver determines which sections of the thread are to be dyed with what colors. She binds bunches of the fabric together with raffia, creating a tight knot resistant to the dyes in which the piece is to be placed. This process is carried out for each successive color, as the artisan uses natural extracts, such as indigo for the blue tones and root barks for the spectacular vermilion hue. A simple hand-loom is employed to execute the weave. Suryati presents the wall hanging on a carved mahogany display rod.
