Changing Image...

This glass needs little introduction. If you think you recognize it, it's because you do. Kartio is the archetypal image of a glass. Durable enough for everyday use, the Kartio range features glasses, carafes and bowls all in several pure glass shades. The simple shapes fit beautifully with iittala's Teema dinnerware, but as classic water classes they complement any table setting with timeless elegance. Designed by: Kaj Franck, 1958

no longer the original design... I have a set of Kartio glasses that I bought when living in Finland in the 1990's. These are great glasses - they feel good in the hand with an understated modern design and are rugged enough for everyday use. I like them so much, I decided to buy some more. The gotcha is that the design has changed. It flares more from the base to the lip and the glass is slightly thinner. This was a huge surprise (and disappointment). Iittala is celebrating the glasses 50th anniversary - but this seems s bit odd since the glass is not the same as the original. The new version of the glass is nice - in fact my wife likes the updated version more than the original. I prefer the original. The annoying part is that I now have mismatching Kartio glasses - and I wonder if Kaj Franck designed both versions... ...or could it be the 90's version is not the original and Iittala has gone back to the original... |
