Junior Web Operations Engineer

Full-Time
Boston, MA, United States

At Wayfair, we are looking to grow our systems administration team by bringing on board a talented individual seeking broad exposure to the technologies that support our infrastructure and our large-scale Internet e-commerce platform. Most of our major projects center around a re-assessment of the web site infrastructure to allow us to distribute load around the world, scale up to handle constant traffic growth, and minimize page load times.

Questions to think about…
  • What is the absolute fastest way to show a high resolution image to visitors in Germany and Australia when it was uploaded in Boston? What if 5000 users in each location request it at the same time?
  • How could you make changes to a page appear immediately to an end user without them having to refresh or reset their browser cache in Chrome? Is the solution different for IE? How could you do it on an iPhone?
  • How would you incorporate teleportation technology to improve site performance and brand reliability? If you had access to a teleportation machine where would you go first?
Some of our bigger projects are to:
  • Re-engineer traffic pre-processing and load balancing by deploying BSD PF servers and merging HA Proxy and NGINX functionality into a single service.
  • Upgrade to FreeBSD v9 and finish virtualizing servers using Xen and Dell blade centers.
  • Stand up Xen clusters and our Web stack - PF, NGINX, and PHP farms - on the West Coast, Europe, and Australia to support traffic localization and our international domains.
  • Find ways to reduce overall page load times by analyzing performance and http routing through the entire stack (NGINX, HA Proxy, Lighttpd), PHP code performance, and MSSQL database calls.
  • Build a functionality testing platform with Selenium and Watir that will integrate with SVN to allow developers to build tests alongside their code, monitor our main production websites, and simulate flash traffic loads.
  • Integrate Puppet, SCCM, Xen and Nagios together with our internal ticket system and SVN to ensure that we consistently and accurately monitor and manage our infrastructure.

Things you’ll play with…Mongodb/couchdb/Nginx/lighttpd/haproxy/Graphite/cacti/Puppet/PHP
