When designing a space, like so many other areas of our life, sometimes it can be hard to find the starting point. Here’s a hint for those times when you find yourself asking, “where do I begin!?” Start with what you don’t love about that room. This is a pretty simple concept, but in my experience, it is a great way to get the ball rolling. Ask yourself, “What do I want to change about this room? Is it the flooring, furniture, or the lighting?” Now you are ready to begin thinking seriously about designing your space!
My rule of thumb is to start from the floor up. If this is the path you choose, that means that lighting is most likely last on the list, but because it’s last on the list doesn’t mean it isn’t as important as the first project on your list.
Be sure to set a few bucks aside for that perfect lighting that is going to become the cherry on top. For a room, lighting is like the jewelry that completes the outfit. Making smart choices about accessorizing and accenting your home décor is just as important as selecting the perfect jewelry and accessories that can make or break an outfit.
The simplest spaces can be completely transformed through lighting. For example, you can add glamour to an unexpected place by adding an ornate chandelier to the bathroom, hallway, or to a walk-in closet. There is no reason that you shouldn’t have a special design moment in these well-traveled and often visited spaces in your home.
Here are a few other ideas to consider when you are choosing new lighting options for your home!
Hang pendant lights on either side of the bed instead of the traditional approach of using table lamps. This creates a dramatic focal point in your bedroom, and this tip is also a space saver because you won’t need a lamp for reading on your bedside table.
You can also hang a fixture with a large, over-scaled drum shade in the corner of a room instead of a floor lamp. You’ll get the same affect, but you’ll save floor space at the same time.
One of the easiest ways to customize your lighting options in any room of your home is to add dimmer switches. This is a great way to create ambiance in your home at any time of the day.
Lighting is a brilliant way to add flicker and fun to your home. After all, unexpected surprises are what makes great design.
