About the Designer
Max Bill Max Bill Switzerland (1908 - 1994)

Max Bill (22 December 1908 - 9 December 1994). Bill was born in Winterthur. After an apprenticeship as a silversmith during 1924-1927, Bill took up studies at the Bauhaus in Dessau under many teachers including Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Oskar Schlemmer from 1927 to 1929, after which he moved to Zurich. Max Bill designed some very successful clock and watch faces for Junghans, a German timepiece manufacturer in business since 1861.

The design for the Kreuzzargenstuhl (cross-frame chair) dates back to the year 1952. It has been in production ever since from 1999 on as a new edition. The model displays Bill s skills as a product designer and received several awards, including the die gute form award by the Swiss Werkbund in the fifties. The leg structure with its crossed frame connection is Bill s own invention. This supports the seat surface in the middle and gives the chair the greatest possible static stability. From a design point of view, the contrast between the thin seat surface and the strong framework emphasises its technical construction and gives the impression of strength and a tactile feel. And, last but not least, it s extremely comfortable.

Manufacturer Details
Beauty of function and beauty as function were two important themes to Max Bill (1908 - 1994), especially evident in this collection of furniture characterized by clarity of design, simplicity, logic and economical use of materials. Max Bill studied at the Bauhaus in 1927-28 under the tutelage of Albers. MoholyNagy, Klee and Kandinsky. His interest in industrial design grew with the economic boom after the war and the importance of the appearance of things, following the example of the talent in America. These historically significant pieces are produced by Wohnbedarf, Zurich, made in Switzerland and Germany
