Dunno about the 400 lb weight rating
Jong Rho from Mesa, AZ – Verified Buyer
Having bought a couple of Winsome storage benches rated at 200 lbs, I was pleased to see this one rated at 400 lbs so I ordered it. In terms of hardware it comes with the same number of large screws (8) to fix the top and bottom pieces to the sides as the the 200 lb rated benches do. However the holes for the wooden dowels on the side pieces are so large that there is no way that the dowels provide any kind of strength or stability. The only thing that I would say is strengthened is the middle of the bench as there is a wooden piece that fits between the upper and lower pieces. However, due to the oversized holes for the wooden dowels, the side by side tensile strength is suspect and I would not want to rock side to side while sitting on it as it is very shaky. As another poster suggested I am going to get some L brackets to strengthen that part. Without it, I think this is a flimsier than the benches rated at 200 lbs.
If you're handy, this can be made to assemble properly.

Yes it's true, some of the wood dowels needed to assemble this item don't fit snuggly. But the problem is easily remedied (not that a customer should have to) and since I really needed this bench here's what I did. I got some Elmer's wood glue from the hardware store for a few bucks, wetted some thick paper with it and wrapped the problem dowels to make them thicker. Problem solved. And since I had the glue handy I put some in all of the connection points and let the bench sit for a few days before moving or using it. Seems to be doing fine.
Beautiful looking piece

Love the look of this bench though we had a hard time putting it together. Some parts are not very secure, we should have used the wood glue like other reviewer did. Can't beat the price for a beautiful piece.
Was exactly what we needed...
Kenneth from Colonial Heights, VA
This bench was exactly what we needed at the foot of our bed! The color was perfect and I made a cushion to fit on top. Very pleased! Pros: Great value! Easy to assemble.
I'am happy with it

Took less than an hour to assemble. Directions are pretty simple to follow. It is pretty sturdy, and looks good.

super sturdy. Sleek design. Very like to picture. Took a bit more assembly than I thought, but worth the time.
Not what I was hoping for
Judy from Gillette, WY – Verified Buyer
Had dings and small dents in the wood. Not worth what I paid for

I ordered 2 of these late on a Friday, and they were at my door on Monday....amazing! A friend put them together for me and had no problem at all. We will put some L brackets inside to make they sturdier, anthough they might not really be neecessary. The piece along the back, on the top, wiggles, but some wood glue will probably take care of that. Great product for the price!

As advertised, and very sturdy. Too bad the weight limit is 200lb, so don't dare have two people put boots an at same time! Color very accurate - as shown on-line.
Compact sleek looks that work

Compact design that works well. But a bit difficult to assemble.
