Excellent Pressure Cooker.

M. Harty from Long Beach, CA– Verified Buyer

This Tramontina 6.3 quart pressure cooker is my first pressure cooker, and I am very impressed with the quality and sturdiness of the product. It is a heavy pot made from 18/10 steel, and has a 3-layer base with an aluminum core. I purchased it because of its positive review from Good Housekeeping. I've been using it a few times a week now to make brown basmati rice, lentils, beef stews, and to steam vegetables. I find it easy to use and easy to clean.

When cooking, I simply begin timing after the red indicator has popped up, and there is a steady stream of steam escaping from the pressure control valve. (Unlike other style pressure cookers, there is no whistle, so you do need to keep an eye on the pot to see when it has reached this stage.) Then I turn the heat down to low, and begin timing. The pressure cooker cooks evenly, quickly, and quietly. I haven't had anything burn to the bottom of the pot yet.

The pressure cooker has a pressure release valve if you want to immediately release the pressure in the pot, like when pressure cooking vegetables. When cooking items like rice (after the required cooking time), I let the pressure come down naturally as the pot cools, and by the time the red indicator goes down, the rice is ready.

When I'm finished cooking, I hand-wash the pot. (Apparently, it's dishwasher safe, but I prefer to hand-wash it so I can make sure the valves are clean.) It cleans up easily. I pull out the silicone gasket to give it a good clean, and just rinse the pressure release valve to make sure it's open and clear of food debris. The rest of the pot clean as you would a normal pot.

I store the cooker with the silicone gasket and the pressure control valve in the pot, so that when it is time to cook, I remember to lightly oil the gasket and to double check that the pressure control valve (and safety valve) are open and clear of debris.

The pressure cooker has safety pressure releases in both the upper part of the handle that attaches to the pot, and along the side of the lid where a bit of the gasket is exposed. They let you know if the pressure is too high and they relieve excess pressure until you turn the heat down. The pot also has a safety lock on the handle. As a person new to pressure cooking, these safety feature made me feel comfortable using the product.

This cooker does not come with a steamer basket. I use one of those "flower folding-type" steamer baskets in the pot, and it works just fine.

This product is a higher quality than I expected, and is a great value. I like it so much, I'll likely purchase the next size up for those days when I cook larger quantities of food. A note to those purchasing their first pressure cooker: the cooker should only be filled 2/3 full when cooking, (and only 1/2 full when cooking foods that may foam--add a bit of oil to minimize the foam.) This may effect the size of pot you choose to purchase. For my two-person household, this 6.3 quart model handles most of my cooking needs. Though, I'd like the 8-quart model as well to handle big pots of stew or chili. (By the way, an amazingly tender beef stew made with carrots and potatoes only takes 20 minutes of cook time!!!)

This is an excellent pressure cooker. Highly recommended.

Pressure cooker

Donna from California– Verified Buyer

This pressure cooker is a bit difficult to acclimate to using. The gasket is fussy and I considered returning it. I decided it was probably more operator error than anything else.
