The Sándor Collection was created in 1988 by Leve and Carole Karvazy with the intention of helping to preserve the traditional motifs of Hungary. Leve fled communist Hungary in 1956 and eventually became a United States citizen. He remembered the wealth of Hungarian handcrafts from his earlier years and, with the help of his wife, he began to do his best to preserve the strong craft heritage of his homeland.
The Sándor Collection works hard to develop the traditional motifs of Hungary into quality hand-crafted gifts and decorative accessories for the western market, as well as to use traditional techniques to express the modern designs created by their own savvy design team. They teach each artisan how to develop products for the Western Market; provide them with a fair income, and in turn these artisans help to keep their extraordinary craft traditions alive for future generations.
The Sándor Collection has always recognized the importance of helping not only the people and cultures of our world, but also the very world in which those people and cultures live. In 2004, Sándor began working with textile suppliers to create an exclusive line of felted wool that would satisfy the needs of customers as well as artisans. That special new felt is also 100% Eco-friendly made from all natural materials that do not affect the precious environment. Additionally, Sándor’s sustainable felt is vividly colored with biodegradable, non-toxic dyes. Even the gift boxes that used for decorated eggs are made from recycled materials.
In addition to the products themselves, they have pledged to reduce their impact on the environment in another important way; they will reduce the amount of paper that they use. That means no more paper catalogs. Since 2005 they have worked to transfer an immense catalog to its new home on the World Wide Web. You are invited to explore the online catalog and discover some of the exciting contemporary and traditional designs that they bring to the American Market.
Today, The Sándor Collection is proud to include other eastern European countries, such as Romania, Bosnia, Macedonia, and Armenia. The work of many talented artisans makes our line of products among the most striking and unique on the market today, and Sándor continues to preserve traditional motifs, techniques, and styles in their line of classic and contemporary handcrafts and home accessories.
