works as expected! from Chicago, IL on 03/21/2015 – Verified Buyer
So far been using this steam spa regularly for about a month and I really like it. We installed our steamspa about 25 ft from our shower. We had to get an extension to the control cord which was $80. In retrospect I would have gone one step higher in the KW to account for this distance, and I wish steamspa's KW selector web page would have a check box which calculates this for you. When I use the system it takes about 3-4 minutes for steam to start coming out and I definitely notice that the temperature control measures the temperature of the rock, not the temperature of the air. We have marble tile and the temperature gauge can get to like 85 degrees while the air temperature is 100-105. I did a humidity measurement and the humidity got to about 80% in about a standard 20 minute steam shower. I like to shower first and then half way through my shower turn the system on, turn the shower off and just relax. I recommend building a system that allows you to turn off the shower head and run separately a handheld with pause function. When you get too hot just turn the handheld on and cool down. You might as well splurge on the other controls to make the experience truly convenient. It's very likely that the contractor you employ doesn't really know 100% how to build a proper steam shower enclosure. I wish the steamspa website specifically listed out all the proper steps in waterproofing. Their instructions are fairly clear about where to place the controls and how to slope the ceiling but lacked in the waterproofing. 1. Behind the concrete board you need a water barrier 2. Once the concrete board is up (need it on the ceiling as well), you need to make sure everything is sealed up with a product like RedGard paint. (The standard size did our ceiling, floor and walls for a 5 by 8 by 8 bathroom fairly easy) 3. Then the tile can go on, make sure to properly seal the tile. 4. We got a custom glass door to fully enclose the space so very little steam escapes while using the steam spa. laticrete has very detailed instructions though we didn't follow 100%: google "laticrete Installation of Tile or Stone in Steam Rooms Over Backer Board" Lastly, the sloping of the ceiling isn't a huge deal from what I can tell. I haven't been in there long enough to get water dripping on me (didn't happen in 30 mins). Also we got a squeegy to wipe off the condensation from the tile and glass. Things get pretty wet! We also had the banging sound when we first installed the steam shower (another reviewer (I think on amazon) complains about this). SteamSpa gave me a direct contact when we bought the steamspa. I called him about it and he explained that there is likely an issue with the water pressure to the steam spa unit and to try to decrease the amount of water pressure. Our plumber had installed a shutoff valve to the steam spa so I turned it 50% on/50% off and the banging went away. So cheers! If I have any issues with longevity, I'll report back here!
