"Hello Leslie. Yes, you can assemble the unit without the upper shelf as it does not have to be used for structural purposes. There will be a few holes in the top for where the pre-drilled holes are for the poles that support the upper shelf."

The sturdiness of the stand shouldn't be affected by taking out the shelf but it may not be as safe, but that's up to your judgment. It also won't affect the appearance (just imagine it without that shelf), it will just take a lot of the extra storage space on the stand."

My husband trusted me to go ahead & pick the TV stand of my choice that was something under $300. So I thought this Tv stand was perfect, because it had a little height to it. So I ordered this online happily free shipping!...When this was delivered, there were no damages. The only thing about this product being ordered & delivered, was the assembling. My husband is not a wiz & not the smartest man in the world, but it took him about 5-6 hours to put this dam thing together!...I probably would of taken 2 hours, but who knows....Anyways he had messed up alot!...and accidentally screwed on the wrong side of the A or H board. He was able to figured it out & covered the minor damages. When the TV stand was finally put together, it looked really nice....Although my husband wanted to give up a couple of times, we ended happy & satisfied with this TV stand....Thank You Very much! Service Review Delivery was ground & got it in about 10 business days, their was a delay ......Packaging was ok and not damaged at all.... Was this helpful? Yes / No
