When the Spanish conquered Mexico in 1540, and claimed it as a territory of Spain, a free flow of trade in European goods began. Over time European elements were incorporated into Mexican and American design. All over Santa Fe - on gates, window grates, outdoor lanterns, and park benches - one can see evidence of Spanish influence. The central motif on this shade was inspired by the Spanish metal work exhibited in the New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors.
