Old Modern Handicrafts Small San Felipe Model Ship

The San Felipe was one of the most beautiful Spanish ships in the 1600s. Launched in 1690, it had 96 cannons and was the the lead ship of the feared Spanish Armada. It was powerful enough to go up against the most formidable ships in the French and British navies. In 1705, the San Felipe and 11 other Spanish ships waged a a furious and heroic battle against 35 British ships. After 24 hours of fighting, the San Felipe was captured, but was so badly damaged that it could not be salvaged as a prize. It sank with several tons of gold.

San Felipe

David from Miami, FL– Verified Buyer

The model arrived quickly and well packed, maybe a little too well packed. I had a devil of a time freeing it from it's wooden crate, until I figured out an easier way than the accompanying instructions. Anyway, I love the model, in all it's spectacular detail.
A Historic Ship Models website has some interesting information on this ship, and suggests that it never actually existed, at least not by that name. Another vessel by the name of "Real Felipe" was built around 1732, much later than the San Felipe, but was also a three-decker.
Whether it existed or not, the model is a faithful model of ships of the time period, and is an extremely interesting conversation piece.
The model met and surpassed my expectations, and was a very good value.
I liked the realism of the model and the exotic woods it is made from. There isn't much I disliked about it, except the way the anchor is just hanging down. It would have been more interesting if it could have been retracted and pulled back down.
I would definitely recommend this model to a friend.

Looks great with the others!!

Da Dan P. from Germantown, WI– Verified Buyer

This model is the third one that I purchased within the last month. I lovd the first two, larger models, but a third large one wouldn't fit in the spot that I had in mind. I was hoping that the smaller scale would be as detailed as the larger models and I was not disappointed at all. It looks great in my nautical-themed family room!!
