Old Modern Handicrafts Real Whitehall Dinghy Sailing Ship

Some hold that the Whitehall rowing boat design was introduced from England. However the famed nautical historian Howard I. Chappelle, cites the opinion of the late W. P. Stephens that in New York City there is a Whitehall Street and this was where the Whitehall was first built. Chapelle, Stephens and others agree that the design came into existence sometime in the 1820's in New York City, having first been built by navy yard apprentices who had derived their model to some extent from the old naval gig. Professional canoe guides and outfitters have relied on plastic or fiberglass for their fleets of boats. Each of them has its own merit. One is inexpensive, the other light. But none of them has the beautiful look. At Woodenboat USA, they are determined to make something stunning beautiful and at the same time strong, durable and lightweight. How can we achieve all of these? All of the canoes / kayaks are assembled from strips of top graded Canadian cedar (a very rare soft yet very strong timber) and then encapsulated in fiberglass with epoxy resin.
