Poles support the venerable branches for the tree is considered sacred. Buddha achieved enlightenment while meditating beneath such a tree, which then became known as a bodhi, or "enlightened" tree. Some of these trees in Thailand are said to derive from cuttings of the original bodhi, and people use stakes to prop their branches. Parinya Nanjai depicts a place of spiritual calm and frames the painting in rain tree wood. ; About the Artist: Parinya Nanjai; Thai artisan Parinya Nanjai says about his art: 'We can essentially learn about art on our own, through everything that surrounds us – nature, culture, everything. A few years of art in the technical school taught me to love painting and I know this to be my vocation. I prefer the northern Thai style because I was born here; it's always in my way of thinking and in my heart. I paint from my own thoughts, and the Lanna style is always on my mind.'
