NOVICA, in association with National Geographic, searches the world to work directly with the finest artisan designers. Hummingbirds abound where I come from, says Francisco Mendoza in Guatemala. "It is a pleasant little creature that inspires many artistic forms, including my wood art and the embroidered huipiles (tunics) worn by the women of my village." Mendoza crafts a magnificent puzzle box that doubles as a decorative box. The main body is carved from mahogany, and ebony is used to shape the flower and leaf. Mendoza uses granadillo wood for the stem of the flower, and guachipilin wood for the hummingbird's beak as well as for the center of the flower.
