I do switch it off sometimes and use it manually by attaching suction cup hook with small pieces of stick on Velcro. Kitchen is narrow and top opened up every time I walked by. During a family get together, someone emptied the trash periodically and accidentally threw away my top. I say accidentally, I hope it was not intentional. Since my batteries died down and to avoid it from having to be touch (for sanitizing reasons) we kept the top off. This new product is so big - just like the advertisement, we were able to put a pizza box and other trash inside this new can. It is the BEST. Service Review Delivery was accurate and on time. It can hold big items that I could never fit in a kitchen trash can before, like pizza boxes, milk cartons, etc. Originally it was in a hallway but whenever we walked by it would trip the sensor, so we moved it to another area and voila!
