SKB 2x12 Amp Utility Vehicle (1SKB-710) from California, USA on 03/10/2011
The SKB 2x12 Amp Utility Vehicle (1SKB-710) appears to be a good, strong, and cost-effective roll-away protective case for my guitar amplifier. I have not used it out-of-the-house yet, but I did load the amp onto it, strap it down, and simulate it's use. The base of the unit feels sturdy and the cover latches securely to the base unit for travel or storage. When using the cover as an amp stand, the amp feels stable up on top (not wobbly). If you don't want the amp placed that high, you can also simply roll the AUV into place, remove the cover, and use the amp that way. I have only two concerns about the AUV: 1) The handles don't feel as secure as I had hoped for. The handles' mounting seems to be reinforced on the inside of the cover, but still... The area of the cover to which the handles are mounted flexes when lifting/moving the amp (i.e. when the AUV cover is on and in the storage position). Perhaps this is normal and it will hold up over time, I'm not sure. I had anticipated that the handles would feel firm and solid, but they don't seem that way to me. 2) The amp is "securely" mounted to the base unit by way of 4 corner cleets (velcro'd to the base unit) and a single wrap-around strap. This feels stable when the amp is in a normal/upright position... However, I am concerned that when the AUV (with amp inside) is laid on it's side (i.e. when it is placed in the back of an SUV for travel) that there is no-support-at-all for the top or sides of the amp. This can't be good considering the typical 2x12 amp is 50+ lbs....! I'm currently trying to engineer a custom-solution to resolve the issue (i.e. some kind of custom-cut foam that will fit over the amp to prevent the amp from moving inside the cover, regardless of whether it is upright or on it's side during travel).
