"Hi Jim. The divider is meant to block off a section of the crate and the pet cannot pass through. This is done to make the space smaller for the animal (not uncomfortably small), but with a smaller space, the pet is not going to go the bathroom in the same spot they have to lay so its ideal for puppies and house breaking."

However, this crate should only be used for dogs who are crate trained and like being inside. The wire crate is VERY cheap and flexible. It works well for my dog because she loves being in there. The magnetic front wooden piece never stays in place. My dog likes to lay towards the front of her crate against the edge and as soon as she lays down the front bar falls off. This does not effect the use of the crate though, it works just fine with or without this piece. The bottom plastic tray is very cheap and flexible, the first day my dog tore the front 3 inches to shreds. However, these are easily replaceable with a sturdier tray. Other than those few minor issues the crate looks great and the large size is perfect for my 60lb lab/hound mix. Was this helpful? Yes / No

It looks beautiful and has come in very handy to hold various items around the house. the only problem is, the quality of the boards and wood used to put this together is not so great. the corner boards are very thin, not what i expected and easily started to crack when i had to get them to fit into all appropriate slots. the base boards fall off regularly b/c the magnets that are suppose to hold this thing together, came right off as soon as we opened the packaging. other wise im happy with it. the price was good, it looks great, ppl hardly realize its a dog crate! i just dont expect the table top frame to hold up for the life of my dog. but i can live with that.
