Basketball Player David Rolls started Masterpieces Inc. in 1997 to create puzzle representative of the various places his family had vacationed. Rolls studied the puzzle industry in his off seasons after borrowing money from his parents to fund a small puzzle business. Rolls sold his first puzzle from his truck in California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah.

He experienced the first boom in his business with the release of his Titanic-themed puzzle that coincided with the release of the Oscar winning "Titanic" movie. Since 1998, Masterpieces continued to grow at an average annual rate of 100%. Masterpieces capitalized on this success and developed a brand identity to become a main player in the puzzle market.

Today Masterpieces features the work of renowned artists and photographers on its puzzles and games. The company continues to hold true to its mission: “to offer the most compelling puzzle and game assortments in the industry.”
