David Rolls started Masterpieces Inc. in 1997 to create puzzles representative of the various places his family had vacationed. The company experienced a leap in popularity with the release of a Titanic puzzle that coincided with the release of James Cameron's Oscar winning film. Masterpieces built up its brand identity in 1998, and subsequently struck up deals with notable artists who agreed to let the company feature their artwork on the puzzles.
