Same Janome quality with lower price tag

 from Norman, OK

Frankly, I really didn't expect much of a sewing machine for the prevailing price of about $150 or so. I was looking for a machine to give my son and his spouse--something to mend clothing with and maybe make curtains. After getting the machine and being able to sew on it myself, I bought another machine for me because of its impressive ability. I do have another Janome machine, the MC 5200, and use that frequently as well. The stitch quality is comparable to the $2000 machine I have. The knobs are a bit confusing to use at first (spoiled by my super-duper electronimo MC 5200), but it is not a deal breaker and after a while, it's pretty easy to use. I really like the reverse lever on the front of the machine, making it super easy to back stitch whenever you want to WITHOUT having to take my eyes off the stitching like I have to do with the MC 5200. The bobbin winder winds very well--a plus because a poorly wound bobbin causes stitch quality woes than just looking cockeyed on the bobbin. The only thing that I did notice about this machine is its sound. It has a bit of a tinny sound, but that could be because of its mechanical gears and levers (versus plastic ones used in Singers, etc.). I've had this machine now for just about 3 years, use it fairly regularly, and am still impressed with its quality--so much so that I think I'll buy another two or three of them to use as borrow machines at church sewing functions. It's that good. This machine is also sold on eBay, and I've seen them discounted to the $100 or so level around the Christmas season time. Good solid machine, a bit noisy, but impressive stitch quality for the money, beating out many machines that are hundreds, even thousands, of dollars more.
