To inflate it you have to use a needle like you would use for a ball. The nubs are sharp points and uncomfortable on bare feet. The pods are dome shaped so you can use them on either side to get different instability. Using two pods allows you to put them at varying widths apart to give you more variation in your exercises. I've used the discs as well, but not at the same time so I can't give a side to side comparison--both products are valuable.
