  • Step 1: Measure the Piece of Art

Measure from where the picture hanging wire pulls taut or where the hooks are placed up to the top of the frame. If you are hanging a canvas piece of art, measure from the top of the canvas to the lip of the canvas (where you will rest the canvas on the nail). In this case, the picture wire is 3 inches from the top of the frame. Use that number to help determine where you will place the nail.

  • Step 2: Determine Where to Place the Nail

You want to hang the wall art so the middle of the picture is 60 inches off of the ground, which is about the average person's line of sight. To determine where you will place the nail, use this easy formula: Divide the picture size by two. Then, take that number and subtract the distance from where the nail should be to the top of the artwork (remember the wire was 3 inches from the top in our example). Finally, add 60. For the piece of art above, which is 25 inches tall, here is the formula in action:
    25 / 2 = 13.5
    13.5 - 3 = 10.5
    10.5 + 60 = 70.5 inches
The nail should be hung 70.5 inches off the ground in order to have the center of the picture hang at 60 inches.
