  • The sun porch at my house has looked the exact same way since my husband and I moved in almost three years ago. It isn't the ugliest thing I have ever seen, but it definitely lacked style. It was also a room we rarely ever used since it was so unwelcoming and uncomfortable. Basically, it was pretty apparent that our sun porch needed a makeover.

My husband and I didn't want to spend a lot of time or money redoing this room since we only use it in the fall and spring, but we wanted to make it was comfortable and cozy when we did use it. The end result was a room that we love spending time in now!

  • With that said, here are five tips that helped us transform our sun porch from my least favorite room to my favorite in the entire house!

    1. Repurpose What You Already Own

Instead of buying all new furniture, my husband and I repurposed pieces that we already owned. For instance, we moved a loveseat (above) from the basement onto the sun porch. The cushions needed to be washed, but once they were clean, the couch was as good as new! We also moved a trunk (above) that we were using for storage from the basement onto the sun porch, which made a great coffee table.

    2. Rearrange the Room

Once we found some "new" pieces for our sun porch, we gave the room a new look by simply rearranging the furniture. Until my husband suggested it, I never even thought about turning the couch sideways! It gave the room a whole new look, and I immediately liked it.

  • 3. Find Decorating Inspiration

Once the furniture was in place, I started looking online for decorating inspiration. Pinterest is a great place to find ideas! Since our blue couch was the main focal point of the room, I kept this color in mind when thinking about how I wanted our new sun porch to look. A chevron rug, like the one Wayfair.com sent me (see My Favorites), was a key piece in my decorating inspiration. I also used this spring porch post from Tatertots & Jello (above right) as inspiration.

  • 4. Try Pieces at Home

When I went shopping for accessories, I had a little trouble imagining what they'd look like on our sun porch. Instead of buying something that ultimately wouldn't work, I purchased a couple of possibilities. For instance, I couldn't decide between two lanterns, so I bought them both and took them home to how they'd work in the space. I originally planned to return one, but both of them together worked so well, I ended up keeping them!

  • 5. Think Outside of the Box

I really wanted an umbrella holder for the entryway of our sun porch, but I had trouble finding one that I liked. I visited a bunch of stores and even spent time shopping online, but nothing caught my attention. Eventually, I found a large vase that worked perfectly as an umbrella holder. I just needed to think outside of the box a little!
