Charles Ormond Eames, Jr (1907–1978) and Bernice Alexandra "Ray" (née Kaiser) Eames (1912–1988) were American designers, who worked in and made major contributions to modern architecture and furniture. They also worked in the fields of industrial and graphic design, fine art and film.


Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2006, the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman are considered among the most significant and collectible furniture designs of the 20th century. The rich veneer and supple leather suggest old-fashioned luxury translated into modern forms, setting an enduring standard for comfort and elegance.

As popular as it’s become, the lounge chair remains grounded in the details that continue to distinguish it. In addition, the lounge chair and ottoman are now available in a veneer called Santos Palisander that captures the original's unique look

The Design:

  • The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman is the culmination of Charles and Ray Eames' efforts to create comfortable and handsome lounge seating by using production techniques that combine technology and handcraftsmanship. Its heritage goes back to the molded plywood chairs pioneered by the Eameses in the 1940s, and It's part of the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art.

  • Charles Eames said his goal for the chair was the "warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman's mitt." Every one is a special refuge from the strains of modern living.

  • The first lounge chair and ottoman, produced in 1956, made its public debut on Arlene Francis' Home show, which later became the Today show.

Looks Isnt Everything

Beautiful living room display, comfortable for short periods. Very low. Can't recline. Once seated, very awkward to stand. Quality excellent.

Not as comfortable as I expected

While this chair is classically beautiful, museum quality, and well made it is very expensive. Maybe I'm too tall or too old but the chair is also uncomfortable for reading or watching TV as it doesn't support the my neck without creating a curve in my spine. To achieve a straight spine I can't rest my head on the backrest, this quickly becomes tiring and I move to a more comfortable chair. It's probably great for shrinks as it keeps them awake holding up their heads while listening to their patients for all those long hours..

Best chair: comfort, style, craftsmanship

I might be biased as this is the third Eames lounge chair and ottoman I have purchased. The other two are cherry, but I am really impressed with the distinct grain of the walnut. The delivery, set up, and speed of processing was flawless. I am comparing to many prior furniture deliveries which were not, ie. RH, WSH, DWR. I would certainly use this company again.
