The light that diffuses through the shade is very soft and it glows towards the ceiling and floor from the top & bottom openings. My husband was very impressed and said he'd consider putting four more of these sconces upstairs. We will have to find a way to adjust the shades as they tip forward a bit. The one thing I didn't see in the descriptiion for it is that it has a switch on the light itself. I wish I'd have known, as I could have saved on some electrical work. No matter. When this tiny box showed up, I knew something was wrong. It looks like it was made for a childs playhouse. Also, the photo shows the shade as looking white, it is NOT, it is more of a tan linen.
