We got this wide gate to keep our baby in the baby-proofed living area and away from the entryway. This product is actually Cardinal's SS-30 gate, 2 BX-2 extensions, and a T bar. We have no problem opening it one-handed, but it can hurt your fingers a little to hold the latch and pull up. It swings quickly and easily out of the way, coming and going. We had several obstacles to installing the gate though. First, the hinge bar used to attach the gate to the extensions did not have screw holes appropriately spaced. I called the company, and they sent another one free of charge, which the man said he would personally drill using the BX-2 extension. We had the same problem with the new one and decided to drill a new hole in the extension. The T bar is meant to stabilize the wide gate assembly on a level floor, and you're supposed to either screw it into your floor or use the provided velcro stripes to adhere it to the floor. Well, we have carpet on one side, which is significantly lower than the tile on the other, and we couldn't have effectively adhered the T bar to the carpet, nor did we want to put a hole in the tile. However, it turned out we didn't need the T bar because this assembly was about an inch too big for our doorway. It will work with a doorway no smaller than 71" apparently. The adventure continued, and I ordered a BX-1 extension, which is about half the width of the BX-2. After a few more days and a game of undo-most-of-your-previous-work, the gate was finally up, and there was much rejoicing. We installed this gate at the top of our stairs about a month ago. It has given me great peace of mind with a crawling baby, and an active toddler niece that comes to visit often. It was a little tricky to install in our particular situation because it had to fit underneath the stair handrail, and attach to a round wooden railing on the other side. We had to screw a 1" by 2" board into the railing post, then attach the gate to the board. It worked beautifully and is very sturdy. We had a hard time finding a gate that was short enough and wide enough, and this one is perfect! The only complaint I have is that there isn't a stop to keep it from opening too wide and smacking the wall behind it. We stuck a little felt piece on the wall to protect it, but the kids keep peeling it off. Also, the gate doesn't always latch if you just swing it lightly closed. You have to bang it pretty hard, so if the big kids are opening and closing it a lot it tends to be a bit noisy/annoying. I love that it is a little tricky to open because it also does a great job of keeping my 3 1/2 year old out of the basement. If you have a child 4 or 5 years old that you WANT to be able to open and close the gate, I don't recommend this one. It takes a bit of hand strength to hold in the buttons. It took me a few tries to figure it out. My 6 year old has a hard time with it, but can manage. My 8 year old can use it easily. The quality and construction are very impressive. The box was totally trashed when it arrive in the mail. I thought for sure it would have broken the gate after looking at the mangled box. But the gate didn't have a scratch on it and has worked perfectly."..."  Read more

I bought this gate to keep our dogs from eating our cats' food in another room. This gate has been a PERFECT solution to the problem. It still allows us to go in and out of the room without having to mess around with a baby gate but it also has the cat door so the kitties can come and go.This is an extremely sturdy gate an made out of metal and not cheap plastic. We have 2 of these pet gates in our home--1 at the front so they can't run out front door, and one at the back so we can open doorwall and still have a barrier that keeps them from reaching the screen. It's the perfect height, allowing us to step over without moving it. It can be placed anywhere--even keeping our guys out of the kitchen when we're cooking. Love it! We have one stationary gate that works well as a barrier to the cat's room. But the freestanding gate is really the way to go. Get it! You won't be sorry. P.s.
