Briggs & Riley Baseline Carry-On Wheeled Garment Bag Briggs & Riley
Briggs & Riley Baseline Carry-On Wheeled Garment Bag

4 stars

I can't say enough about the high quality and durability of this Briggs & Riley wheeled garment bag (and the other two B & R bags I own). The outer nylon will never rip, it is armored at the right places, the handles are solid, the interior fabric is sturdy, and the zippers are second to none. This bag has enough capacity to hold 3 suits, 3 shirts, socks, underwear, tee shirts etc. for 3 days, and have a little room left over for an optional clothing item or two. The inside liner has a dedicated tie slot, and various mesh and non-mesh pouches. Two button-on pouches that fit in the otherwise unused space above the garments' shoulders help maximize space. I can get 3 pairs of underwear in one and 3 pairs of socks in the other. The bag rolls easily and fits in an overhead compartment. The outside pocket has a handy easy-access slot-like pouch inside in which to keep cosmetics/fluids that need to be quickly removed for security, and there's ample room next to it to fit one of: a folded light jacket, or a couple of files, or a magazine and a laptop (use a padded sleeve, there's no padding in the outer pocket of the bag) or even, in a pinch, an extra pair of shoes. The bag has one drawback: when unfolded, it is about 2-3" too short to accommodate my suit jackets (46 regular) when they are placed on hangars. The bottom edges of the suits have to be folded back on themselves, and the result after traveling all day is wrinkles. I tried hangars with very short necks, but it still left an inch or so of overlapping suit at the bottom. I nearly sent the bag back, but I was so impressed by its obvious quality that I played around with it until I discovered it will (just) accommodate my suit jackets if I carefully lay them out with NO hangars and use the built-in garment holder straps to secure them in place. This actually works quite well--my suits arrive unwrinkled--but it adds a couple of extra minutes to packing and unpacking. When the bag is folded up, the problem dimension becomes width, not length, so I think Briggs & Riley could have designed the bag to avoid this problem while still meeting carry-on size limitations. A certain other high-end bag manufacturer does, in fact, make a rolling carry-on garment bag that is just about 2" wider than this one. If you are taller than me (5"11), or about my size and don't want to hassle with the careful folding of your suits when you pack, I suggest you look at that bag. A normal-sized woman, or man 5'9" or less, could use this bag with no problem. If not for the slightly-short unfolded length, I'd give this bag 5 stars."..." Read more

First, I should indicate I am frequent traveler, with weekly trips that are 3-4 days in length, as well as weekly-long trips overseas. I prefer carry-ons for expediency, speed of getting in & out of the airport and security and loss prevention. I have been using a 22-in Brookstone carry one - a great bag, but after years it has started to show it's age. I started looking for a carry-on bag that would give me more space, less weight and better protection for my suits. I started to look at the hard-shell hybrid bags (hard shell on the bottom and walls, and soft-shell at the top (or closing) section. A flexible front flap with sub-compartments, and an expandable capability, were highly desirable options. This bag fits the bill, and at a very reasonable price. The product is particularly unique as it uses two separate hard-shell elements in the frame. It is a double clam-shell design, meaning there is one bottom section, and a second top section, both of which are constructed of hard-shell plastic material. The only soft portion to the bag is the top (or front) clam section. The bottom section serves well as the frame of the bag, providing strength, and maximum utility space. This is were you would put all your general items, including shoes, toiletries, and non-delicate items. The second (or top) section is for your suits and other items that need to be protected from compression. The bag fits in the overhead compartments, of most wide-body jets, and fits wheels in (in a perpendicular manner). The bag will NOT fit into the overhead of a regional jet (Embraer or Bombardier etc.). By my calculation this bag is about 4-5% oversized, yet it still fits into overhad compartments as I note above, while allowing you to carry on more material. Only considerations or complaints: - The handle is reasonably sturdy, but could be a little better. - The wheels seems strong, currently are quiet, but the wheels axle extends by 1/16th of an inch and will collect debree (threads etc) from the floor as you roll it along. I've had to clean the axle a couple of times already. - The front accessories bag is a little tight and the zipper did break on my bag (probably due to luggage handler...)"..." Read more

My previous comments regarding my first purchase of the garment bag applies to this. If I didn't think it was a great bag I would not have not purchased two in two months. Have yet to use it but it they are better than anything I have had. My other garment bags were used in my 19 wedding anniversary trip to Hawaii. Just celebrated my 46th. They are like two different worlds. Will be using these bags when we go on a cruise to Bermuda next week. It will be the first time they will have been used. They have a lot of space, great material, have wheels to pull etc., It is going to be interesting to see how much we can each put in our bags and how durable they really are."..." Read more

I travel often for business and have for the last 12 years. Always tend to carry on when possible to avoid baggage issues, though the airlines have stepped up their game and have fewer bag issues. Plus, with fees for checking, from which I am exempt, there are a ton of people carrying on and limited on-plane space for carry-ons, which I sometimes have to fight for if I have a tight connection or am late to the boarding gate. So, I got this bag to use for 4+ day trips - so I don;t have to stuff my 21" carry-on full of clothing and the usual paperwork that travels with me. This bag is twice the capacity of a normal 21" and my luggage folks tell me its a brand that will hold up well with being checked 6x/yr or so. I was hesitant that it didn;t have a 'no matter what" warranty which comes with most bags I buy but it seems to be well though out and constructed. Not enough experience with it yet to really rate durability or the color (suspect the platinum color will get usual marks when handled by baggage personnel - buy black if this bothers you)."..." Read more
