Frieling "Goliath" Mortar and Pestle Set

The Goliath is really Big and Heavy! Fantastic for Grinding Spices, Seeds, Nuts, Berries, and so on! Needs extensive Breaking in, as it is so Rough that the first few times you use it, it will provide a lot of stone dust. I just ran it empty a few times, with Washing between runs, till the Dust lightened up. This Mortar is probably too heavy for some folks. Some weight could have been shaved by Hollowing out the base some. Works Great for Big and Medium Jobs, not so good for Powdering Pills (the stone is too coarse to do Pills - You need one of the Little Porcelain Jobbies for that Duty). Handles are only suggestions. I am breaking in the Small end of the Pestle for a more concentrated force at times. America's Test Kitchen Rated this as the Best - I will have to concur, not having tested them all myself. It is better than any others I have.

Ordered this based on the review in Cook's Country. I couldn't be more pleased. I like the large bowl-it holds quite a bit. The one downside is he rough bottom along with its weight make for the possibility of scratching softer surface. We overcame this by placing a circle of felt on the base.

Heavy, good looking, pestle is perfect length Does the job quickly and effectively, guests and friends admire it. Its very authentic looking.

Love this Kitchen tool! Use it to grind spices, grains,make crumbs, crack nuts. It will last my lifetime and will passed on to one of my children!

Bowl is not quite as deep as I'd expected, so raw rice shot out when crushing. This thing is huge and ugly: the mortar and pestle weigh a combined 14 pounds. The rim on the mortar arrived with a chip, and there were no care instructions included. But it works.

This mortar and pestle set is great. I've never had one before. Recently I had to grind up some spices to make some jerk chicken.

An excellent product. It's heavy, solid, with a slightly rough interior that maes it ideal for lightning-fast grinding and pureeing.

This mortar and pestle has very nice proportions and a good finish on the working surfaces. The mortar has a deep bowl with steep sides and the pestle is fairly long which makes it easy to grip.
