This set works excellent in our see thru fireplace. I was concerned that the back of the set would not look good and no one at the manufacturer [...] knew if it would work. So I took a chance and couldn't be happier. I did not attach the hinged upper log holder and instead just put these four upper logs in place when I use it. I also put the rear log backwards so it faced out the second side of my fireplace. It looks beautiful. If you have a three sided fireplace it should look fine for you too. Again, don't attach the four small top logs to the set and just place them to block the view of the gel cans on the side. Please note, the directions state that when placing these top small logs you shouldn't block the flame which will cause soot and block air flow.The first time we used the gel it did have an odor. The best I can describe it is like strong rubbing alcohol smell. It did give us headaches. So it being winter and too cold to open a window for ventilation we just opened the chimney flue about an inch and problem solved. It probably lets the warm room air escape up the chimney too, but unlike a real log fire when we extinguish the gel fire we just close the flue and don't have to wait until any embers die down. In Spring we will retest for odor with the flue closed. If it still bothers us we can then at least open windows to ventilate.We have used straight 70% ISP alcohol and enjoy the flames that way too. The only problem is that alcohol puts out a high pitch noise that sounds like crickets outside. Since I have Tinnitus the sound probably annoys me more, but not enough to stop enjoying the flames. I don't believe the straight gel makes the same type noise. The gels crackling sound does not bother me and is quite enjoyable.All in all, we couldn't be happier. [...] easy to set up, especially if you don't attached the upper hinged log frame. I have no problem moving a loose small log to put the gel out or to light it. Not having these four upper logs attached allows me to rearrange them to vary the look. So you might look your new set over first and decide it you want to attached the hinged part or not. We were considering converting from a wood burning fireplace to a gas fireplace. When I started looking for possibilities, I ran across these gel fuel conversion log sets and decided to give it a try. The quality and look of the logs is amazing. Looks completely real. Certainly not like those electric log sets and the way the top logs can be flipped up for easy access to the fuel cans is most convenient.......and safe. So far we have been very pleased with it. Our electric bill did go up a bit but we have had colder weather than usual. Everyone who sees it thinks that it is either real or a gas log. Our only regret is that it does not come in a size that would make the blower up closer to the top of the fireplace opening as the heat would go out into the room better. It gives a nice ambiance to the room. It is easy to install, and you can add a couple of small logs to it, like I did, if you like."..." Read more
