"Hey Stew. You can certainly use a standard frame. The installation points on the headboard and footboard only appear higher off of the ground because of how the photo was taken. A regular frame will attach to the headboard as the optional frame would."

"Hello Annie, the picture of the head board is with a standard size box spring. If your frame is higher than 9" off the ground I would suggest using a low profile box spring. That is up to your preference, but if you want it to look like the picture, you should use a standard box spring."

I will add, though, that even when it is screwed very tightly on to the bed frame it still "wobbles" a bit, but definitely not worth sending it back!!
