“Hi, I have a Malinois which is a lot like a German Shepherd but much leaner and slightly smaller structurally. She is approximately 50 lbs. I was planning to get the medium backpack but was hesitant because it said it was more for a basset hound or bulldog. She is a very lean dog (we run every week) and I don't want a huge back pack for her. I would rather be on the compact side. Do you think a medium will be big enough? Malloney” asked by Malloney

"Dear Malloney, Based on the description of your dog, the medium will offer the best fit. The backpacks are designed to fit a wide variety of dog breeds which is why there is such a large discrepancy in the weights for the sizes. For example, the large size is meant for a Labrador all the way to a Saint Bernard/Great Dane. So the backpack is designed to fit properly for all breeds within the specified weights. Your dog being roughly 50 lbs, falls in the middle of the recommended weight for the medium backpack so this will be the best size for her. Another way to get a better idea how the backpack will fit is to measure your dog from the base of the neck (where the flat of the back starts) to the base of the tail. Then compare this measurement to the depth of the medium backpack (14") and this will give you a good estimation how much area the backpack will take up when on your dog.
