You need a moisture barrier between your baby's wetness (diaper accidents or spit up) and the mattress to prevent such things as mold and smell to name a couple. Don't think it's a pad like your adult mattress padding you buy in a mattress store. A baby's mattress should be as firm as possible while their time in the crib and they don't need a hotel type feel for bedding. This is to prevent such things as I have previously mentioned from happening to the mattress itself and extending the life of the mattress. It doesn't have elastic or straps to hold onto the mattress but putting sheets over it isn't a problem unless your all thumbs. It fits perfect on the LA Baby mini crib mattress and doesn't hang over or bunch up. I also use the LA Baby Compact Knitted sheets which I have also reviewed here."..."  Read more

I purchased this mattress because I wanted to minimize my baby's exposure to potentially harmful chemicals found in some mattresses and I couldn't afford a 100% organic/latex mattress (the cover of this mattress is organic and the filling is cotton and wool, but not organic as far as I know). I have only been using the mattress for a few weeks but so far am very pleased with my purchase. The mattress is very firm (it does not compress at all when my baby sleeps on it -she weighs 14lbs) and because it is not a coil mattress, it is light and easy to maneuver for sheet changes. The waterproof cover is a definite plus. The only thing I don't love about the mattress is that it gave off a strange musty odor for a few days but it seems to have stopped now. All in all, I would definitely recommend this mattress to parents with similar concerns about toxic materials but without the budget to go all organic."..."  Read more

I just received my LA Baby mini crib mattress and it is really nicely made. It is perfectly firm and soft at the same time -- it doesn't have springs, so it's not flimsy and this is the perfect thickness for a mini crib. You don't need a 5" mattress for a mini crib, trust me. But the "mattress" that is included with my crib was a disgusting 1" plastic coated piece of cheap foam -- disposable. I wouldn't let my baby sleep on that. This is so pretty and comfortable, I'm extremely happy."..."  Read more
