For over 75 years Couristan, Inc. has been a powerful name in the area rug and broadloom industry. Owned by the Couri family for two generations and operated today by brothers George G. Couri, Chairman and Ron J. Couri, CEO and President, the company prides itself on having the most exquisite handmade and power-loomed floor coverings available from anywhere around the world.

Founded in 1926 by brothers Basil J. Couri and George J. Couri, and appropriately named "Couri Brothers," the company began its humble beginnings by importing fine handmade area rugs from Persia. According to Ron Couri, Couristan's CEO and President, importing area rugs from Persia was a difficult task. "I remember listening to my father and uncle's travel stories. First they took a ship to England, then another to the continent. Once in Europe they took the Orient Express and then drove through the desert to Persia. They finally arrived 32 days later. It was quite an adventure."

The first area rugs imported by the company were a few shipments of Sparta Rugs from Smyrna. At the time, the company began affixing "Couristan" trademark labels to the back of each and every rug it imported. This mark was composed from the family's surname "Couri" and the frequently used suffix "stan", referring to the region of small weaving villages in which the company imported its rugs from. The company would quickly begin to broaden its horizons, as well as its area rug offerings by importing rugs from India in 1927.

In the 1930's, Couristan began importing handmade hooked rugs from China and braided rugs from Japan. At the time nearly 99 percent of the total production of Japan's floor coverings were being exported to the United States. According to Ron Couri, Couristan was regarded as one of the country's largest importers of Japanese braided rugs from the 1930's to the 1960's. During that time there wasn't much of a market for Oriental-design products in the United States, but through Couristan's ingenuity and extensive design development, the company was able to create a substantial marketplace for handmade Oriental area rugs.

Scott from Muskego, WI	1.0 12/19/2011 Doesnt look like its picture. Product Review This rug was a big disappointment upon arrival and roll out. It is not like its picture. I bought it for what its picture noted for color hues, contrast, and design. I was very disappointed when rolling out to find that it is very dull, dark, and bespeckeld with hues in its different colors that you can not see online. It makes it dull, dark, and tacky. I have had it on the floor waiting for it to flatten out and it does not due to its construction causing it to pull in and warp the perimeter of the circle. One half of the rug has hidden stiching and the other has long and protruding WHITE stiching around the edge. I can not find a right sized pad also. Service Review It was delivered quickly but not even worth the sale price. Its to PHOTO SHOPPED. I would return it if It wasnt for the fact I am unable due to an injury and am bed ridden. Its been a few weeks and still not taken shape. It was the first rug in moths to have the colors I was looking for my lake house. The carpet is of a very high qualty material that seems to shed both dirt and moisture quite easily. We use the runner going from the hot tub to the house and it drys fast and keeps our feet warm. The area rug looks great by the seating area. Pat from Naugatuck, CT 06770	4.0 1/21/2010 Christmas gift to daughter. The rug was a Christmas gift to my daughter. She hasn't taken it out of original wrapping yet - waiting to put on patio. Says from what she can see, she loves it. Would have used in mudroom, but too large. My own personal complaint is that the very next day after I purchased said rug, you had a 30% off sale on rugs. jk130 from PA	5.0 8/29/2009 Perfect Product Review I needed an outdoor rug runner for my deck, which gets very hot in the sun. The size of this one is perfect and the design matches my deck furniture. It serves the purpose of protecting feet from burning and also dries wet feet coming from the pool in to the house. It surprisingly hasn't faded, despite having been in the bright sun all day, every day for a few months. Most everything else on my deck fades in a matter of days.
