We purchased the installation kit along with stair treads. It was pretty much a last ditch effort to find a way to keep our elderly Irish setter from falling down our hard wood stairs. I will admit to a healthy dose of skepticism as I installed the treads. The process was quick and easy and relatively painless. And the best part is that it has worked. The treads are firmly installed, using the installation kit and the dog now makes it easily up and down the stairs. My daughter-in-law noted that she had been doubtful when I told her I was going to install stair treads, but that not only did they look attractive,but she and her three year old son also found the trips up and down the stairs to be more secure. We recently removed carpeting from our stairs and had the wood floors beneath refinished. We were looking for stair treads that would keep our dogs from slipping as they went up and down the stairs, and we wanted them to be durable, practical and, frankly, not very noticeable. These fit the bill -- they're close to the color of the blond wood and because of the configuration of our stairs, the package contained more treads than we needed, so we have back-ups if we mess any of them up too badly. We bought these to replace rubber treads on our basement stairs that had dirt-collecting grooves. These are far more attractive and slip-resistant. I picked the light brown color in hopes that dirt would blend right in. To some extent it does but there's still enough visible dirt that they need vacuuming every couple of weeks. Haven't tried machine washing yet because the treads will need to be re-stuck. Maybe that will get rid of the staining that must have come when my handyman installed the treads.
