Always enthralled by knife sharpening, Friel included in his list the invention of a truly effective electric knife sharpener that would work on a wide variety of knives, particularly, fine quality gourmet knives. He rescued a 20-year-old set of Gerber knives from a closet. They were a present from his wife June, and to his great frustration, he had never been able to put a satisfactory edge on them.
With fierce determination and a personal deadline of three years to show himself adequate progress on the project, Friel set to work in a basement laboratory and then sought the assistance of other professionals. "They were the nucleus of the EdgeCraft team," recalls Friel. He created thirteen prototypes before he came up with one that satisfied him. Soon after its introduction, the Chef's Choice Diamond Hone Sharpener earned the acclaim of food experts and chefs worldwide, including Pierre Franey, Jacques Pépin and the late Craig Claiborne.
Friel compares the day he left DuPont to follow his second career to the day he walked away from Johns Hopkins University after earning a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering."Unlike the day I left Johns Hopkins, when I left DuPont I could proceed with the knowledge and confidence gained from some 40 years of hands-on experience," Friel recalls. "I saw a need and I had the confidence that I could deliver."

It works very well, and is super simple to use. It sharpened a pair of scissors I had cut copper wires with back to like new. I haven't sharpened my wife's knife edge dress making shears yet, but I'm sure it will do the job.
Not as complicated as it looks

I used this to sharpen my 10 year-old sewing shears--Ginghers. Upon first opening, I very nearly just put it all back and gave it. It's pretty intimidating, all the pieces and instructions it comes with. But once narrowing down which type of sissors I have (knife edge), I was able to skip directly to those specific instructions and very easily sharpen the blades. I was happy with the results, my sissors are cutting like new again and in just a few minutes time. I haven't tried them with any other types of sissors and I have not tried reangling. But for what I purchased this set for (sharpening my every-day sewing shears), it worked great.

I got a Chef's choice knife sharpener for Christmas and liked it so much I went shopping for a scissor sharpener. This is the best! I sharpened all of my really really dulled edge scissors and they all are cutting well now. Even managed to put an edge on some embroidery shears. Love this easy to use and effective product.

This was very easy to figure out and worked great. The instructions were precise and I had no problem figuring out how to use it. My sewing scissors were sharp in no time! I can't wait to sharpen all the other scissors in the house. I always thought it was ridiculously wasteful to get rid of scissors when they were dull, especially pricey sewing shears, now I don't have to!
