"Hi Alan! The bookcase is too wide to fit into the spot where the slide out desk would be placed. However, there are two shelves on the outside of the slide out desk which can still be used as a bookshelf if you do not wish to make use of the desk."

One thing I did and recommend is to replace wood support under the mattress with stronger wood slats. Overall, pleased with product, it saves a lot of space and looks very nice. Was this helpful? Moogs from NY	4.0 4/5/2011 Very cute bed!! My 4 year old daughter loves this bed!! My only suggestion is you place an extra bed rail on the side thats not against the wall(like the one you would buy for a toddler bed for $25). With an 8 inch mattress the bed rail was not high enough to protect her from rolling out. Placing the extra bed rail on the inside of the other was as easy fix, otherwise the bed is great! Only problem was on the back top part one of the peices holes (that the spindle thing goes in) didn't mach with tho top piece. My husband was able to corresct that problem as it was more of a cosmetic thing anyway. Was this helpful? Yes / No
