Sizing Blinds & Shades

Wayfair Guides
There are two ways to hang your blinds and shades to consider before making a purchase: inside mount or outside mount. Depending on how you want to hang your window treatment, choosing a specific mount position is important to ensure a perfect fit. We've created this helpful guide to help you get started and take the proper mesasurements.

1. Inside-Mount

An inside mount is when blinds and shades are mounted within the window frame or casing. This style of mounting offers a cleaner look.

How to Measure:

  • Measure the width and height of the window pane. For example: measure inside drywall to drywall or frame to frame. Record the narrowest measurement.
  • The window needs to be at least 1 inch deep.
For both inside and outside mounting, make sure there is enough depth to allow room for the actual blind or shade. If the window isn't deep enough, the blind or shade will come out too far.

2. Outside-Mount

An outside mount is when blinds and shades are mounted outside the window frame or casing. This style of mounting often makes the window appear larger.

How to Measure:

  • Measure the width and height of the window, including the molding or frame.
  • For the width, overlap at least 1 1/2 inches on both sides of the window. Round your measurements up instead of down, because you can easily adjust the length of longer shades or blinds.
  • For horizontal blinds: Add 3 inches to the width and height measurement.
  • For vertical blinds: Add 4 inches to the width and 3 inches to the height. Overestimating the width measurement will help compensate for when the blades or vanes are fully opened.
