We love this bed with the extension because of the XL length (we're tall so we expect our son to be tall and we like this). The construction is solid wood and good quality. The setup was easy enough for my hubby and my toddlers first words when he saw the bed the next morning was "Woo!". The white colour with navy blue/plaid/red bedding looks phenomenal so white does not have to mean 'girly'. Overall we love the bed and it fits well in a tiny, city room. Pitfall - it is clear they mass produce every bed frame in the exact same configuration/sizes so what this meant is that there are unnecessary rail slots on the lower bunk even though it didn't need those slots. I'm big on esthetics so when I see unncessary holes in wood it disappoints me. One notable point - being twin xl and double xl frames means you need special mattress/bedding. Now this was not hard to find or expensive but one trick I learned - a double xl fitted sheet can be swapped with a queen set. So instead of buying double xl, just buy queen size. I thought we could get by without the ladder, and without having to spend the extra money for the ladder. I thought the kids could just climb up the ends of the bed, and they did so without complaining. However, after about a month, I soon realized how difficult it was for them (4 year old twins, and a 5 year old) and me. As I watched them go up and down, it became more clear that it was unsafe. Their feet slipped often, and it was not comfortable on the feet. This was also something I noticed myself climbing up w/them to tuck them in, and change the sheets, etc... So, I ordered the ladder and it made a HUGE difference for everyone. My kids LOVE it, I love it and it made all the difference.
