Bookcases

This bookshelf was exactly what I was looking for. I chose the textured black finish to mitigate the industrial smooth steel look in order to reduce their impact on the room. I am very happy with that decision. These bookcases are well-built and very sturdy and a great lower cost alternative to wood bookcases. For me the main problem with wood bookcases is their tendency for the shelves to warp and bow when fully loaded with large books. With these bookcases I don't have that problem and I am able to fully load the shelves with anything I desire without concern of warping or bowing. High end, short wall bookcases to go with upscale furniture are hard to find. This one can also be an attractive TV stand. So from the picture and description we felt confident to go with these. There are actually three cases that fit together almost seamlessly to make one extended bookcase. We ordered this for our library and are very pleased. Only disappointment was that two bookcases were manufactured incorrectly. If the manufacturer had tried to install the shelves it would have been apparent that two of the sides-- which are predrilled for movable shelving options--were not properly aligned. The sides were likely installed upside down on each bookcase resulting in shelves that could not be made level. Since we weren't going to ship them back, the fix was to carefully measure and drill new holes for the shelving pegs without drilling all the way through the sides of the bookcases. Since we only wanted the shelves in one fixed elevation to match the correctly-made bookcase, just eight holes had to be redrilled. But this was a minor inconvenience considering how beautiful they are and otherwise well constructed. I got this bookshelf unit to replace a particle board bookshelf unit that collapsed under the weight of all my textbooks (I'm a college student). This Hon unit is both sturdy and lightweight (45 pounds). It came completely assembled. [...] One person can carry it alone, but it is bulky. I got the color "putty" which is a grayish beige. I think "putty" is an accurate name for it. Basically, this shelving unit suits my purposes very well... there is only one con I have with it and that's the Hon nameplate in the center of the top shelf. I didn't really notice it in the picture (although it's there). I just find the nameplate to be tacky and annoying. However, as a college student, I'm not trying to have the most fashionable room-- I'm just trying to have strong shelves that won't collapse. We have a large library and needed to expand shelving. We had been looking for bookshelves for quite some time until we found this product. It was very easy to put together, once you figured out the picture directions. It would have been nice if all 5 of the shelves were adjustable, not just the 3. Great product."..."  Read more
